I have been going through “Homage to Amanda – Two Hundred years of American Quilts”, a beautiful book that shows quilts from the collection of Edwin Binney and Gail Binney-Winslow. For each quilt they give a little historical summary as well as a photograph.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Star of Bethlehem – 1830-1850

Sunburst Crib Quilt, 1840-1860

Unnamed pattern, 1850-1870

Feathered Star with Wild Goose Chase and Eight-Pointed star, 1850-1870

Joseph’s Coat, 1880-1900

These two quilts are part of the section of the book called “Collector’s Choice”, which features indigo-blue-and-white quilts. Apparently , during the second half of the nineteenth century blue-and-white quilts attained a high status among the expert quilt-makers. The featured collection has many beautiful quilts that show expert craftsmanship.

Carpenter’s Square, 1880-1900

Feathered Star, 1860-1880

Maybe some of these historic quilts will inspire you to design your own pattern or to recreate one of these!!
