My daughter thought it would be a fun experiment to see what would happen if she took a pair of scissors to her brand new shirt! Well, surprise surprise she cut a nice little hole right in the front of it. I sewed it up but it gathered and puckered a little funny so I decided to applique that baby up.
First I found a few heart shapes in sizes I liked and traced them on to freezer paper. I like to double-up my freezer paper for a more substantial stencil (by tracing on to the sticky-side of freezer paper, and then ironing two sheets together).
Then cut out your stencils as exact as you can on your lines. Lay your stencil on the wrong side of the fabric you will be using.
Iron your stencil on to your fabric, then cut it out leaving between 1/4″ – 1/2″ inch of fabric.
Paint spray starch on the fabric around the stencil and then iron it into the stencil shape, getting it as exact as you can without bumps.
Remove the freezer paper. You can then use fusible web if you want by following the directions to adhere your fabric shape to your shirt.
Sew around the shape using a decorative stitch.
And you are done! And my daughter’s once ruined shirt is now her favorite. Success.
