Ok, Saturday Samplers…have you started your blocks yet? BRAVO if you have, but for those of us who haven’t here are some helpful tips:
Both of the blocks this month are made up almost entirely by square-in-a-square blocks!
You want to be VERY careful about getting your fabrics in the right spot, or your blocks will not have the right pattern in the end.
Amy wants us to really try and set our seams before we press them. That means before you press your seam the direction her pattern tells you to, you want to just press the seam you just sewed FIRST. So press your stitches while the fabric is still right sides together. This helps set your stitches and keeps your measurements truer.
Lets review how to sew a square-in-a-square:
1. Sew 2 triangles on opposite sides of the square
2. Set your seam, then press toward the triangles.
3. Sew on the remaining two triangles.
4. Set your seams, then press toward the triangles.
5. Square up each square-in-a-square block to 3 1/2″. BE CAREFUL to leave 1/4″ from each point of the square. The ruler shown below is really helpful for this because you can match the points of your square right into the lines on the ruler to ensure exact measurements.
And that is just about it. Not too tricky this month, just remember to watch fabric placement and set those seams!
i do not think these instruction are as good as last months. If I would have know that the instruction want not be on the web site I would have taking better notes in class.
If there is anything you need help with on this month’s block’s let me know! We thought the blocks were a little easier this month and didn’t need a full tutorial; they are both just basically square-in-a-square blocks put together. But if you have ANY problems or questions don’t hesitate to email or post another comment on here and I will see what I can do to help!
Your pictures are a great addition to the detailed instructions that Amy always gives with the fabric. Thanks so much for your conscientious help and support!!
I think the tutorial is fine I just liked the in depth tutorials simply to make sure I was cutting the right fabric!! There are so many pieces of fabric this time that I’m nervous each time I make a cut! My fingers are crossed I can read well enough 🙂
I know what you mean!! Lots of little pieces…have you already done it? I can take a picture of all my fabrics cut out if it would be helpful!
Is there a trick to getting your points to match properly?
Thanks for this wonderful service!
I want to make this pattern into a quilt will you be continue like this. Thank you.
Will you be giving more directions on how to continue with the star pattern to make a full quilt?
This particular star pattern is part of a “sampler” quilt, so it will be made up with many different kinds of blocks. I do try and post pictures of the blocks every month at least, but to get the full quilt pattern you need to pay to be a part of the Saturday Sampler block-of-the-month club. Hope that helps!
