This is one of the blocks for this month’s Saturday Sampler. It looks like a lot of fun!

HAYES CORNER BLOCK TUTORIAL

Kit Contents:

1) Green print square – 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”
1) Gold square – 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”
1) Black print strip – 3 1/4” x 6 3/4”
1) Beige/green rectangle – 7” x 7 1/4”
1) Gold strip – 1 3/4” x 6 1/2”

Spray your fabric with starch and press.

1. Trim your green square and gold square to 3 1/4″. Draw one diagonal line on the back of the gold square.

2. Place the green square right sides together with the gold square. Sew 1/4″ away on both sides of the drawn line.

3. Cut in half between the 2 lines of stitching. Press toward the green. “Square up”, or trim each block to 2 1/2″. Set aside. You should now have (2) half-square blocks.

4. Sub-cut the black strip into (2) 1 1/2″ strips. You should now have (2) strips that measure 1 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ or so. Cut a 3 3/4″ piece off of one of the strips. The rest of that strip will not be used. Set aside the 3 3/4″ piece. Discard the leftover piece.

5. Trim the gold strip to measure 1 1/2″ wide.

6. Place the gold strip and the longest black strip right sides together. Sew along one long edge. Press toward the black. Sew along one long edge. Press toward the black. Measure your sewn strip. It should measure 2 1/2″ wide.

 

7. Sub-cut your sewn strip into (4) 1 1/2″ slices.

8. Sew together (2) four-patches using two slices for each four-patch. Press well. You may press the center seam toward one side, or pop the center seam and all the seams will go in a counter-clockwise direction. Each four-patch should measure 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″. Set aside.

9. Sub cut your beige green piece as shown on your instruction sheet (and below). You will end up with 7 pieces.

10. Sew the 3 3/4” black piece from step #4 onto the long edge of the beige/green 2 1/2” x 3 3/4” rectangle. Press the seam toward the black.

11. Sub-cut into 2) 1 1/2” slices. Set aside.

12. Sew a 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” beige/green rectangle onto one side of each four-patch as shown. Make sure you sew the rectangle onto the strip onto the correct edge of the four-patch. Press toward the four-patch. Both units need to look like this:

13. Sew the beige/green – with a black square, pieced rectangle onto the other side of the four-patch as shown. Press toward the pieced rectangle. All three of the black squares need to be going in a diagonal line. You should have 2 units that look like this:

14. Sew the other two 1 1/2” x 2 1/2” beige/green rectangles onto the edge of the two half-square blocks from step #3. Be careful to sew the rectangles onto the correct side of the half-square blocks. Press toward the beige/green. You will have two units that look like this:

15. Sew the 1 1/2” x 3 1/2” beige/green strip onto the side of the half-square block as shown. Press toward the strip. You should have two units like this.

16. Sew your four sections together into your block. Sew two together and then join the sets of two together. Press the center seam toward one side. Your block should measure 6 1/2”.
