Tutorial for Chimneys and Cornerstones Block

For one 6 1/2″ by 6 1/2″ block you will need:

(1) 2  3/4″ x 10 3/4″ blue rectangle
(1) 5 3/4″ x 11″ tan rectangle

Starch and press your fabric

 1. Sub cut the tan rectangle into a 2 3/4″ row and (2) 1 1/4″ rows.

Then cut the rows up-and-down into three rows, the first measuring 2″ , then 3 1/2″, and then 5″. You should end up with (9) pieces.

2. Sub-cut the blue rectangle into (6) 1 1/4″ x 2 3/4″ rectangles and (1) 2″ square.

3. Sew the 2″ x 2 3/4″ tan piece in between two 1 1/4″ x 2 3/4″ pieces. Press towards the blue pieces.

Sew the 3 1/2″ x 2 3/4″ tan piece in between two 1 1/4″x 2 3/4″ blue pieces. Press towards  the tan piece.

Sew the 5″ x 2 3/4″ tan piece in between the last two 1 1/4″ x 2 3/4″ blue pieces. Press towards the tan piece.

5. Sub-cut each of the sewn rectangles into (2) 1 1/4″ slices. These will now be called “cornerstone” strips.

6. Sew your block together. Sew the 2″ blue square in between the (2) 1 1/4″ x 2″ tan strips. Press towards the blue square.

 

7. Sew the two shortest cornerstone strips onto the sides of the block center. Press towards the outer strips.

8. Sew the two medium length (3 1/2″ x 1 1/4″) tan strips on the opposite sides of the center. Press toward the outer strip.

9. Sew the two medium length cornerstone strips onto the remaining two opposite sides of the center. Press toward the outside of the block.

10. Sew the last two 1 1/4″ x 5″ tan strips onto two opposite sides of the center. Press toward the outside of the block.

11. Sew the last two long conerstone strips onto the last two sides of your block. Press the seams toward the outside of your block. Your block should measure 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.
