This is a beautiful block that is fun to assemble!

Evening Star Block Tutorial

For one 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ block, you will need:
1) 3 3/4″ gray floral square
1) 2 3/4″ x 10 1/2″ red strip
1) 4 1/2″ x 9″ beige rectangle

Step 1: Trim the gray floral sqaure to 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″

Step 2: Sub-cut the red strip into (4) 2 3/8″ squares. There is a great “cheater ruler” called “Lazy Girl Flying Geese Ruler” that you can use for this measurement, as well as the large square in the next step. Use the measurements marked “D”.

Step 3: Sub-cut the beige piece into (1) 4 1/4″ square and (4) 2″ squares.

You should have all of these pieces now:

Step 4: Draw one diagonal line on the back of the four red squares.  Alternately, you can draw two parallel diagonal lines on the. back using the magic wand tool.

Step 5: Lay two of the red squares right sides together on the 4 1/4″ beige square. The squares will overlap a little bit in the center (you can trim that if you want to reduce bulk).

Step 6:   Sew 1/4″ away from the line on each side if you drew one line or sew on the two drawn lines if you used the magic wand.

Step 7:   Cut through the center between the two stitching lines forming two “heart-shaped pieces. Press the seams toward the small red triangles.

Step 8:  Place the remaining two red squares right sides together on the heart shaped pieces. Sew 1/4″ away on both sides of the drawn line (or sew two seams directly on the lines if you used the magic wand).

Step 9: Cut each unit through the center, between your stitching lines, to form four flying geese units. Press towards the red triangl

Step 10: Measure your flying geese units. Each unit should measure 2″ x 3 1/2″. You can trim off any “dog ears” from the bottom corners.
Step 11: Sew your block in three rows as shown below.

Row One: Beige Square, Flying Geese unit, Beige Square. Press towards the beige squares.

Row Two: Flying Geese unit, Gray Floral Square, Flying Geese unit. Press towards the Gray Floral.

Row Three: Beige Square, Flying Geese unit, Beige Square. Press towards the beige squares.

Sew your three rows together. Press both the top and bottom rows towards the middle. Your block should measure 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″.

I am looking for the pattern that uses the evening star block that was shown on your Garden Party post. It is red, white and blue – has the evening star block and a flower (maybe tulip) block, a nine patch and these are all set around an American Flag. Just wondered if you knew where I might find this pattern. Thank you so much for any help you can give. Pat
